The Quest for the Best Cheap Beer in a Can continues, episode 23: Schlitz High Gravity V.S.L. The QBCBC archive is here.
This beer has a lot to live up to. I’m sort of a Schlitz connoisseur myself. Its canvertising says V.S.L. = Very Smooth Lager and has a very manly image of a muscular bull to go with the manly 8.5% alcohol/volume! My can is also proudly stamped UNION MADE!
% Alcohol: 8.5
Price: $1.49/24 oz can = $0.75/12 oz. can
Aroma: not terribly well. Smells very much like a cheap 4-5% lager. Nothing distinct, a bit of hoppiness though.
First Sip: Weird. Has an initial “trappist” style bite to it that quickly fades into a bitter, unpleasant, medicine-y taste.
Aftertaste: Again, not very good. The bitter medicine-y taste stays in the mouth well after your sip is over.
Overall: Very disappointed. When I saw the percentage on this beast, I was hoping it would have a feel more like the Steel Reserve 211 8.1%, where it feels a bit more microbrewish. But alas it was pretty crappy. I much prefer the regular lager in taste, hands down. But it is pretty sweet that there is 8.5% alcohol in this bitter, horrible can. I mean, I’m pretty buzzed already. Thats pretty fucking awesome, after half a 24 oz. can who cares how shitty it is if it gets me wasted!
For the fuck of it, hat tip to @radiumyttrium.
