The Quest for the Best Cheap Beer in a Can continues, episode 18: Corona Light. The QBCBC archive is here.
Sunny beaches, tropical latitudes, carefree siestas… with 39 less calories and 8 grams less carbs! Yes, this is Corona Light, in a fucking can. Damn I feel so good about myself, I think I’ll grab two. And I can do that easily actually since the cans are skinnier than your typical beer. But of course what we really want to know if, es esta cerveza la cerveza mas fina?
% Alcohol: 4.5
Price: $13.99/12 pack 12 oz can = $1.17/12 oz. can
Color: Very light in color, like dirty mexican water. Not the kind you get at resorts either.
Aroma: A very beer-like aroma really, a bit of hops, a bit of malt, not too corn starchy.
First Sip: Has a slight floral or citrus tenor to it. I can’t tell which it is really. Definitely a hint a of hops. BUT, it does have that corn starchy taste to it, but there is enough hops and flavor in there to mask it up such that it isn’t wretchingly horrible (take a lesson from south of the border Bud Light)
Aftertaste: The hoppiness comes out more in the aftertaste, but it turns into a slightly unpleasant bitterness on the back of the tongue.
Overall: Again, a solid cheap beer in a can. Not offensive to the palate. Just like the Tecate, I would rate it midway with Schlitz and Schaeffer, although slightly less. I also rate this slightly less all around, because it is a subpar quality beer being passed off as an import as import prices. This brings the Punch way down, amount of alcohol per dollar makes it non-competitive in its class.
This is a highly slammable beer though. Does it remind of tropical sunny beaches? Well, not really, but then again I live on a sunny beach, so fuck you!
