QBOB 3: Purple Haze

Quest for the Best Odd Beer Episode 3: Purple Haze

Jimi Hendrix was on the brain when shopping for this QBOB’s brew…

The brew: Purple Haze from Abita Beer

ABV: 4.2

IBU: 13

Other” ingredients: raspberry pulp

Price: $2.99 per 16 fl oz bottle

Color: gold (amber, 8)

Aroma: powerful berry scent with a boozy tinge

First sip: crisp, a bit sweeter than a plain ol’ wheat beer and clearly lacking in berry flavor…

Overall: Disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, it was a fine drink.  My thought at first sip:  “summer picnic.”  But I was in a Voodoo Child mood and looking for a heavier raspberry taste.  This slightly sweet wheat beer just didn’t light my fire.  Abita warns drinkers they might some of that raspberry puree floating about or settling out in the glass.  I saw a bit of the stuff, but certainly didn’t taste any – a surprise given the berry smell.

This beer wasn’t the least bit odd.  And if I’m in the mood for a sweeter wheat beer, I’ll hit bourbonbastard up for a QBCBC-tested one and save some dough.
